Hazing Within Fraternities and Sororities
When joining a sorority or fraternity on campus Hazing is a significant aspect of
sisterhood/brotherhood that has a hidden and serious problem that can threaten and
sabotage the experience for these pledges. Hazing is a dangerous form of initiation that
has great consequences. Many college students find hazing harmless and fail to realize
the repercussions that come with hazing. The statistics of college students dying from the
effects of hazing is rising each year when it should be declining since hazing is illegal in
all 50 states.
Hazing can be both mental and physical. Mentally pledges are degraded and
talked down to. What some don’t realize is that mental hazing can be triggers to opening
up certain events from a pledge’s past and can start the beginning of a deep depression.
