Character Summary (Hamlet)
Hamlet is a scholar and was attending college when his father, King of Denmark,
suddenly passed. Hamlet returned to his city to find that his mother, Gertrude, has already
remarried to his uncle, Claudius. Shortly thereafter, he gets information that his dad had been
murdered by Claudius. Hamlet spends the rest of the play suffering from internal conflicts that
impede him from enacting his revenge on the current King. He contemplates much about the
afterlife and what merits right from wrong. He cannot get himself to murder King Claudius due
to his indecisiveness. However, when prompted by the moment to act at a whim, Hamlet shows
no hesitation to kill, as he did to Polonius by stabbing through the curtains. His thoughts of
where his moral compass should lay torment him to madness, which manifests when a call to
action is imminent.
