Should the United States put more restriction on gun control?
The issue of gun ownership has created a lot of controversies over a long period of time.
In the second Amendment of the constitution of the United States, it is clearly written that people
will have the right to own guns. Some misuse their rights to own a gun and of such the
government is determined to enact laws against gun ownership. Gun control laws are not in any
way linked to increasing crime rates. These crimes that occur from guns have many root causes.
As a matter of fact, more restrictions on gun control will not only increase crime rates but also
mortality rate. Gun control laws have both pros and cons. As much as these laws have always
existed, putting more restricting laws is of no significance at all. Individual’s right to own guns
should be protected at all cost, as they are needed for several reasons such as self-defense from
local criminals to foreign invaders (Bisakha Sen 24).
There are several reasons as to why the United States should not put more restrictions on
gun control. First, gun control laws do not reduce crime rates. Evidence has it that the more
people owned guns the less the crime rates. Gun owners are reported to be more vigilant and are
therefore able to respond to attacks rapidly. Several people believe that when they own guns they
are actually protected from victimization. It also reduced the loss of property during and attack.
Generally, criminals do not obey the law just because it was passed but in most cases, they fear
retaliation from the victims who might be packing heat. Without this fear, they have an easier
time carrying out their deeds as the victims are at their mercy. As it is commonly said, “If guns
are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns”. Additionally these laws do not prevent criminals
from owning guns and breaking laws (Coates and Pearson-Merkowitzz 506). Guns do not kill,
people kills. Guns in the hands of non-criminals are a social benefit. Therefore, the laws only
take away guns from law-abiding citizens and ignore those that are owned by the criminals. The
myths on how gun control laws will reduce crime rates are not feasible as there is no link
between gun control and lower crime rates. If more people were allowed to own guns, violence
would reduce by a significant number.
Secondly, more gun control laws make it difficult for citizens to be able to protect
themselves and their families. It is not possible for the police to be there for everyone all the
time. They can only get to a crime scene after the rime has occurred. Guns are commonly used in
cases of self-defense and strict gun control laws interfere with the ability of citizens to defend
themselves against violent criminals. It is well known that the only thing that stops a bad guy
