Gun control: More or Less
Imagine if the right of owning a handgun was taken away from you. Then wouldn’t that
violate your constitutional rights that you’re supposed to have if you’re an American citizen.
With the right to own a handgun insures constitutional right, personal safety, and security needs
are guaranteed. Right now, there are at least 40 laws preempting local gun regulations or
constitutional provisions guaranteeing firearm rights. Only seven states require handgun
registration. With only these states requiring a handgun registration, you will find that you can
get a handgun 45 states without having to register (“Kenneth, Jost, Page 896). If you fix the
background checks needed to purchase a weapon, then there is no need to take away an
individual’s gun ownership. An example is the Brady Handgun Violation Prevention Act which
established federal background check and five day waiting period to purchase a handgun (by
Kenneth Jost, Page 903). I believe this a major subject in America because I too am an American
who believes that this gun ownership is an unshakable right to American citizens.
The second amendment states “A regulated militia is necessary to the security of a free
state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed”. This gives Americans
the right to individual gun ownership. This is an unshakable right for all Americans. This is also
a constitutional right and we can’t change a document that has shaped American society into
what it is today. I believe that the constitution was put in place to stop government officials from
infringing on these rights. It is the duty of our government to preserve the rights as Americans.

Not to interfere in the way the United States was formed by changing these rights. These rights
were set by our founding fathers to protect the people not to disband the people.
When you take that right away from gun owners, you affect not only the owner’s safety,
but also the safety of the ones around him. Look at our society right now. The possibility of
someone hurting you and your loved ones increase every day. Many people and officials have
thought that without handguns that it would be safer, but in this county there are more than
30,000 people killed by firearms each year (USA Gun Violence Statistics.”
