Group Project – Individual Submission (Amazon Echo)
Amazon Echo is a wireless voice controlled speaker that offers cutting-edge in home audio
entertainment. The Echo is able to respond to a variety of voice commands to inform, educate,
and entertain. It uses on-device keyword spotting to detect the trigger word that activates it, and
then sends information to Amazon’s Alexa Voice Service for interpretation and response. (B&H
Features, 2015).
Product Description
The Amazon Echo speaker connects to Alexa, which is a voice service that provides voice
commanded responses similar to the features demonstrated by “Siri”, the personal assistant
computer program, used in media devices produced by Apple Inc. The distinction is that the
Echo offers cutting-edge technology for today’s home entertainment systems. Additionally, it
provides more accurate and faster responses to voice commands including music streaming,
news reports and weather updates. The Amazon Echo smart speaker offers much more than just
plays music; it’s an always-on, always-connected digital companion (B&H Features, 2015).
Product & Firm History
The Amazon Echo is a product of Amazon Technologies Inc. and was founded by Jeffrey
Preston Bezos (Jeff Bezos) in 1994. Jeff Bezos graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Princeton
University in 1986 with a degree in electrical engineering and computer science. He was
fortunate enough to be able to start his online business venture using $300,000 of his parent’s
retirement money in his garage. In 2014, Bezos was listed in World’s 50 greatest leaders by
Fortune Magazine in 2014. During that same year he was also ranked no.8 on the list of Top 10
Riches Retailers in the world, by RIS News (Boardroom Insiders, 2016).

Product
The brains behind Amazon’s Echo product suite is the intuitive voice response
technology, Alexa, named after the ancient library of Alexandria. This impressive technology can
be programmed to perform various tasks within the home ranging from dimming home lighting
to placing an online order for more paper towels over the internet. The Amazon (Alexa) Echo
device is capable of providing answers to most questions asked via a Google search at the hands
free convenience while walking about your home.
