Group Leadership: My Experience

I led the transition stage portion of our group work. This phase is characterized by
anxiety, resistance, conflict, defenselessness, & the here and now focus. This stage can be argued
as the most important, because the overall cohesiveness of the group is determined here. (Coley,
Coley, Coley). As a leader, my challenges were providing a safe environment for all group
members to openly share, intervening with my group in a timely and sensitive manner, &
effective conflict resolution.
My tasks all revolved around the core characterizations of this stage – anxiety, defensiveness,
conflict, & being present. I taught members: the value of recognizing & dealing with conflict,
and how to work constructively when facing anxiety & defensiveness. I empowered members to:
recognize their own defensiveness patterns, become both more interdependent and independent,
