I. Introduction
1. Background of the study
In terms of traditional grammar, English words can be classified into eight parts
including nouns, pronouns, verbs, auxiliaries, adjectives, articles, adverbs, and prepositions
(Frank. 1972. Modern English Exercise for Non-Native Speakers Part 1: Part of Speech). Of all
those parts, pronouns in text play an important role because the sentences will combine to form
texts. Besides, pronouns can help speakers communicate as they can be easily referred to as
people or things without unnecessary repetition, which helps alleviate the conversation’s
ambiguity.
2. Rationale
The study of English has been recently gaining momentum because it is the means to
promote mutual understanding and international cooperation. In Vietnam, English has been
widely taught as a compulsory subject in almost all schools and universities.
Grammar is an indispensable part of English, which contains numerous elements
comprising personal pronouns. Personal pronouns play a significant role in daily communication
in almost every language, including English and Vietnamese. They are also one of the most basic
English grammar parts people need to master when acquiring a new language.
