The New Deal and The Great Depression
The Great Depression spread through the United States industrial environment from 1929
to 1940. The reason that this time was call the Great Depression was because it was the worst
blow to the economy that the United States has ever seen. The Great Depression began by the
complete collapse of the stock market on October 24th, 1929 when about 13 million shares of
stock were sold. The damage was extended on Tuesday, October 29 when more than 16 million
shares were sold making the day forever known as Black Tuesday (Hardman, 1999).
During this time the United States was paralyzed. Many of the businesses closed and the
banks began to fail, this put millions of Americans out of work. Those who were still able to
work took a drastic cut in the amount of money that they were making because the companies
were not able to pay them the way that they were before. It was as if the value of money was not
