Martha Graham is an interdisciplinary artist, dancer, choreographer, and pioneer of American
modern dance traditions. Creating her own technique, Martha spiraled a newfound culture and tradition of
modern techniques, as well as codification within other dance styles. Although Graham’s original
intention was to break tradition, Martha ironically created the foundation of traditional modern dance that
blossomed into many realms that so many artists can explore.
Martha Graham began her training under Ted Shawn and Ruth St. Denis, whose performances
inspired her to build a dance career. Graham opened the Martha Graham Dance Company and when the
