The poem that was chosen between Meredith’s “Notes for an Elegy” or Graham’s
“Spoken from the Hedgerows”, was the poem by Jorie Graham. Reason why this poem was
chosen was that it was really heart felt by reading this whole poem. While reading this, it felt like
a there was a letter being written to their family. Each line was giving a deep description on what
was going on. This poem was illustrating a situation between different events that were going on
with the soldiers. Throughout this post, there will be a break down to what this poem is trying to
interpret. This poem was more interesting to understand and breakdown between the poem by
William Meredith. Many of the poems that were read before did not really give a dialogue
between soldiers. With his dialogue this can give readers a better understanding of what is
happening.
This poem gave us readers the ability to know what is happening in every line. The poem
“Spoken From the Hedgerows”, has to be one of the top poems that were read in this class. This
poem does not really have the theme of death involved but has more of a theme of how a soldier
says his goodbye to his or hers family. So death can actually be counted as a theme because no
one will ever know if they will survive in battle. There is a clear description going down starting
from the beginning of the poem. “To bring back a time and place/ A feeling, As in “ we are all
inn this/ together. “ Or the United States and her allies fought for Freedom” (“Spoken From the
Hedgerows”, Line 1-6). This seems to give a reminder of what has happened throughout the war.
To bring back a time of where they constantly did not get any sleep or had to wake up and worry
is something that can be tough. The reason why it would be worrying is that one does not know
if the day that they wake up can be their last. It seems that Jorie Graham is trying to give us a
better understanding and is trying to make us vision events just as someone in the war had
experienced. Once opening in about trying to remember about the war, there is clear evidence in
