Summary
Trumps administration declared that he will stop a program that defends
thousands of Nicaraguan immigrants. He gave them until 2019 to leave the U.S. It
protected more than 50,000 Nicaraguan people. Trump has deferred the decision on
Honduran people. Many have lived in the U.S. for years, some as long as two decades.
The largest communities are in Southern California and Texas. The administrations are
still deciding if they want to end protection for larger groups of people. Although they
deferred the decision on Honduran people, congress says that they might find a
permanent decision for them to stay. Hondurans have six more months till they really
declare a decision. But they said, “effort” and many people are questioning if they really
will put in that “effort”. The Homeland of Security has declared that the country is now
“safe” for them to be able to go back. This program started because of the natural
disasters that happened. After Hurricane Mitch wrecked Central America in 1998 they
extended protection to immigrants from Hondurans and Nicaragua. People are saying
that it’s wrong to end the protections for people from Central American countries such
as Honduras and El Salvador, which are now convulsed by drug-related violence. Many
families with children that are Honduran are now just hoping that congress will actually
put up with their word by saying that they will protect them or at least extend the
deadline. But either way to have that certain “protection” people must have been
residents from the time their country received their designation.
