As a part of the Business, Government, and Society module, students were tasked
with obtaining information on different agencies to see their relationship between businesses
and the Government (as the two have a mutual relationship). As such this group was assigned
the Fair Trading Commission, referred to as such throughout the document or as the FTC.
The Fair Trading Commission (FTC) was established in 1993, and was set up to carry
out the Fair Competition Act. The Fair Competition Act (FCA) was established in 1993 to
ensure that the benefits of the competition process in Jamaica are unhindered by
anticompetitive activity. The objectives of the Act are to: encourage competition in the
conduct of trade and business in Jamaica, ensure that all legitimate business enterprises have
an equal opportunity to participate in the Jamaican economy, and to provide consumers with
better products and services, a wide range of choices at the best possible prices (JFTC, 2017).
