Why good employees become a bad manager
According to the scenario, it turns out that a hard-working employee, technically
proficient, is
not necessary to be a good manager. Why? Maybe is because his personality traits, or is
lack of
motivation, but all in all, this kind of people is lack of management and leadership skill.
Here is my own experience. When I was in China, I joined a club, called ACCA. One of
the staffs
in this club was extremely good at solving technically problems and dealing with statistics.
The
board of director promoted him as a director of marketing, and it turns out to be a bad
decision.
A director of marketing in our club needs to promote all activities held by us and attract as
many
students as possible. However, this new director did his job badly. First, he is a very
introvert
person. He had difficulty in explaining himself and expected us to read his mind. Second,
he
seldom motivated us. The only thing we could was to accomplish his task but never
received any
praise after that. Third, as a marketing director, it is significant to have an open mind and
always
come up with some creative ways of promoting our club. However, he thought it would be
secure
to follow old patterns. Fourth, we didn’t feel a sense of belonging under his control and the
only
thing we have done together was complaining about him. He could successfully complete
his
work but he lacked a skill of management and leadership.
