Gone with the Wind tells the story of the floating life of Scarlett O’Hara, a Southern
noblewoman struggling to survive the storms of civil war and reconstruction. Scarlett
falls in love with Ashley, a strange aristocrat with many ideals, but he marries his gentle
cousin Melanie as his wife. Scarlett does not give up, still finds ways to pursue Ashley
but gradually she becomes entangled in a fateful love affair with Rhett Butler, a careless
but sincere man.
Scarlett is different from all the beauties known in life or literature. She is not holy, not
feebleness, not dependent or passive. Scarlett is stubborn, callous, and full of energy.
She is not afraid to rise up to get what she needs, even if it means stepping on others.
Once Scarlett has made up her mind, even if there are demons blocking the way, she
will do it. Unlike the idealized female characters in romance novels, Scarlett is lively
and full of life, her feet clinging to the red soil of Tara to survive.
