GMO is an abbreviation of genetically modified organism. A GMO is a
modification made to food that can make them grow faster or bigger, stay fresh longer
and has other benefits to some. With these changes in our foods, this takes the food out
of its natural state. Putting GMO’s in our food mainly benefit the producers not
consumers.
There is a scientific process to making GMOs and putting GMOs in natural
foods. Creating a GMO involves taking one organism and combining it with another to
convert its original DNA, this process is called genetic engineering. For example, one
animal or insect species DNA can be transmitted into the other to make the other
produce some thing it may not normally produce. Some GMOs are also created to make
plants grow faster, grow when it is not in season and even to keep away pests like ants
