Gettysburg Monument
The monument of Major General George Gordon Meade. This monument is located south of
Gettysburg on Cemetery Ridge. The monument is of George Gordon Meade on his horse.
George’s horse was named Old Baldy. The monument was created by Henry K. Bush-Brown.
This horse was significant because Meade rode Old Baldy at Gettysburg. Injuries to the horse
occurred on July 2nd. Old Baldy was a strong horse and survived his injuries. George Meade was
born on December 31, 1815 and died on November 6, 1872. George Meade stepped into
command late before the battle. George Meade was in command of the Union Army for only
three days when the battle of Gettysburg occurred.

With stepping in so late to battle he was still
able to be successful as a leader. “The State of Pennsylvania monument is located south of
Gettysburg on Hancock Avenue.”

The State of Pennsylvania monument is very large. This
monument is the largest in Gettysburg. This monument is made from North Carolina with granite
and iron. It weighs 7,500 pounds. Inside the monument is words about the loyal women from the
