Getting In on the Ground Floor
Question: What type of organization design would you recommend that Ruehter use?
Answer: Ruehter will need to use an integrative leadership organization design. It is
focused on the competencies of the leaders in that particular organization.
While waiting for the lawyers to work out final arrangement, Ruehter should start early
planning, budgeting and programming to avoid performance deteriorating after acquisition.
That way, they can get the ground running before the final arrangement is completed. The
first step in the process is to create a joint integration group. I will recommend a talented
individual assigned to this acquisition process as failure to provide knowledgeable
employee to oversee this process is the most common mistake companies make. If possible
Ruehter may need an outside expert as well.
Lack of careful attention to management selection may cause interruption in making
decision, leaving the newly acquired Dutch Insulin maker to be unproductive with talent,
resources and time.

Question: If there were joint R&D efforts, would this be a problem?
Answer: It may be a little more difficult as it is time consuming and cost more. In this
situation, management will need to collaborate to effectively create and execute bonding
among them. Also, they must be careful about antagonizing each other during this time and
more effort should be focused on solving problems. Expert may come from different
discipline as well. Management can also downsize and maintain an adequate base. T he
fact that most employee may not be familiar with the job may make it a little more tedious
for the expert. They may also face the problem of complex forms to complete, product
development and bureaucratic procedures. Finally, design standard may need an
improvement in joint R&D efforts.
