Different Geographic Areas in Korea
Koreans have common cultures and characteristics but, they also have their specific
characteristics depending on their geographic areas. There are three different kinds of
geographic areas in Korea: ‘coastal area’, ‘mountain area’, and ‘flat area’.
One type of geographic area in Korea is coastal area. Coastal areas are the places where
the cities get in contact with sea. People who live in coastal areas usually catch fish or
carry out cultivating industries to maintain their livelihood. As there are various sea-foods
in coastal areas, lots of big fish markets exist. Also, people in coastal areas are interested in
a weather forecast since their daily life is depending on the weather. Bu-san, In-cheon, and
Pohang are some major coastal areas in Korea.
Another type of geographic areas in Korea is mountain area. Mountain areas are the place
where the cities are placed nearby high mountains or hills. Most people in those places do
farming in the terraced paddy fields which have been formed by cutting out the steep slope
of the mountain. Sometimes, they pick crops for special use such as medicinal herbs, and
ginseng. Also a lot of mountains are used as ski resorts during winter, so it has been highly
activated in the field of winter leisure industry in mountain areas. Taebaek, daegwallyeong,
and Yeongwol are some major mountain areas in Korea.
