GENETICALLY MODIFIED ORGANISMS
Our Future or Not?
The controversy about genetically modified organisms (GMOs) has become a popular topic
to the public since that GM crops were introduced in 1996. GMO is an organism whose genetic
material has been artificially manipulated through genetic engineering, and the process of
implantation could cause gene mutations. As a major achievement in the history of human
science, GM food has occupied a significant amount of our food market, with an enormous social
and economic benefits. As an old saying goes “a coin has two sides”. Some people who agree
might argue GM crops are more convenient to cultivate and increase the food production because
they are more adaptable to a harsh environment, more resistible of pests and diseases. However,
their advantages are not competent evidence saying that GMOs are good for health. There are
still some potential risks and safety factors involved that we can not find the solution at present.
The factors include a massive amounts of chemicals required in GMOs, the increasing in human
