Genetically Modified Organisms: The Effects and Uses
Genetically modifying foods and other organisms, has landed some companies great
fortune, companies such as; Monsanto, DuPont, and Bayer (Rotman 2006). So what does genetic
modification consist of? You can genetically modify a seed to withstand things that a naturally
grown seed may not. Genetically modified corn and soybeans in the US for example, are created
to withstand invading insects, pesticides and harmful bacteria (Rotman 2006). Genetically
modified corn and soybeans are not typically used for direct human food, 4 percent is used for
high fructose corn syrup (Rotman 2006).
GM foods are said to withstand more brutal conditions, but are they safe for human
consumption? The American Academy of Environmental Medicine does not think GM foods are
safe for human consumption. According to the Institute of Responsible Technology, their website
lists studies where consumption of GM foods is harmful. Soy allergies went up 50% in the UK
shortly after GM soy was introduced, sheep and buffalo died after eating Bt cotton plants. Rats
who consumed GM corn also had less babies and they were smaller than rats that ate non GM
corn, according to the Institute of Responsible Technology.
A study titled “A long term toxicology study on pigs fed a combined genetically modified
(GM) soy and maize diet,” was conducted by eight different scholars. The study was a little over

22 weeks, and comprised of 168 pigs. Half of the pigs were fed a GM diet and half of them were
not. The study found that GM fed pigs were 25% heavier than non GM fed pigs, and GM fed
pigs had a higher rate of stomach inflammation. The image below shows four different pigs that
were involved in the study, two stomachs from a non GM fed pig on top, and two stomachs of
pigs from GM fed feed on bottom.
