Text: In chapter fourteen the table ‘14–3 Leading Causes of Death in the United
States, 1900 and 2013,’ shows that in 2013 suicide is the tenth leading cause of
death in the US.
Explanation: In 2016 over 42,000 people in America took their own lives and was
the second leading cause of death for 18-24-year olds. This is a staggering figure
which is only increasing over the years and I believe this is an issue that needs to
be addressed.
Sociological Significance: Health is a state of complete well‐being: physical,
mental, and emotional. This definition emphasizes the importance of being more
than disease free, and recognizes that a healthy body depends upon a healthy
environment and a stable mind. Studying mental health is important in the
discipline of sociology because a person’s mental health contributes to all aspects
of their life.
Application: I personally have suffered from a mental health issue since I can
