Holism: Gender Concepts and Perspectives interventions in Understanding Self
Simone de Beauvoir once said, “One is not born but became a woman ,”this statement strongly
conveys that biological constitution cannot absolutely determine or even define femininity and
masculinity of an individual rather it is the evolutionary and ethnographic world that elaborate how
women and men identify and express themselves .
Viewing oneself through body structures or biological aspect might be subjective and hinder us
from exploring and understanding oneself, I mean with the concept of essentialism, it boxes us from any
possibilities and opportunities that we can still change our innate features with the influence of various
external factors.
Understanding various concepts such as Gender role, expectations, norms, gender identity and
expression help us perceived oneself in a broader and more ambiguous perspective .It facilitates our
existing inquiries that will lead us to better know our holistic being or selfhood.
