Gender and Political Action on Women’s Liberation
Introduction
When a question is posed on the subject of what is the creative purpose of women in the world,
the answer that is always given, at least according to the findings by Garvey (112), is that it is to
bear children. On this assumption alone, many men across the world, and predominantly in
Asian and African countries, kept their women uneducated and veiled in public. It was until the
experiences of the first and the second world war that women became liberated and began to get
increasingly involved in events to free their countries from the jaws of exploiters and undertake
to develop them. Over the past, women have been involved in numerous political actions. In the
movie Salt of the Earth and The Battle of Algiers, together with the article on the Battle of
Algiers by Donald Reid, and the memoirs of Zohra Drif, Tillion, and Rigoberta Menchú, the
audience and the readers are presented to a diversity of women engaged in political action. With
reference to these works, this paper aims to analyze how being a woman figure into their
practices and goals.

capability to fight for what they understand to be their rights but that women can also do that. In
the societies that are depicted in the film, women have increasingly taken up an active role.
However, despite this presentation of women being more active, what is clear in the film is that
the bias and segregation against women is something that has not been dealt with completely and
that there is a need to address this bias and segregation. In the film, what is clear is that despite
the challenges that women face as they become active participants in the affairs of the society,
the roles that they play is a testament that women are an important part of the society since apart
from bringing a different view of things in the running of the society, they also bring in the
crucial diversity that is an important element in guaranteeing the success of revolutions and
social movements. The most important lesson from the Salt of the Earth is that men continue to
dominate the society and that in doing so they undertake to deny the women depicted in the film
