Fruitvale Station: An Expression of Minority Portrayal
Thesis Statement: Oscar, his friends, and his family are portrayed by the director in such a
manner that leads one to believe that a person’s choices and actions in life can be a result
of how society views them based on color and financial status.
Fruitvale Station’s portrayal of Oscar Grant had one seeing him as a black male criminal
who strongly desired a fresh start in life.
Oscar’s life choices, as seen in Fruitvale Station, were not only disruptive, they portrayed
him as a degenerate in society.
His criminal behavior landed him behind bars on more than one occasion.
His frivolous attitude resulted in a loss of a legal job and almost led him to back to a life of
drug dealing.
During Fruitvale Station, Oscar was desperately seeking to be a good son, boyfriend, and
father in order to make both himself and his family proud.
To begin a new path in life, Oscar chose to pour out his drugs into the ocean, as opposed to
selling them.
He showed restraint form any obstacle, such as drugs or fighting, that would keep him
from achieving his fresh start in life.
Fruitvale Station’s director did an exemplary job at expressing the demeanor and
disposition of the characters.
