The Role of Free-will versus Determination
The value that many human beings have placed on the idea of free-will is priceless. Then
there are those who believe that our actions are all controlled by something else, an external
factor. Whether it is physical forces, fate, or a higher power such as God, the debate over free-
will and determinism is very old and seems to have no end. Anytime there is an issue such as
free-will, that cannot be proven with scientific reasoning, people must rely on fate and that
becomes problematic as it is the concept of uncertainty that people find it hard to agree upon.
Free-will and determinism can have different meanings for nearly everyone, adding to the
confusion and making it hard for people to agree upon just one definition. For me, free-will
represents the position that we as individuals are essentially able to make our own choices and
create our own actions; we control our own lives. Determinism is the position that we are
