Week 1 Essay
Frederick Douglas was a smart man who cared deeply about his people and country. His speech
in 1865 at the Massachusetts Antislavery Society was a necessary deed at that time and for every
generation after. His words that day were very truthful and may have been considered radical at the
time. His main hope was to see that his people have a fair chance after being set free and being able to
get the rights to vote. They had been working so hard for the country and fighting in wars for their
country and after treated as if they didn’t exist. There was a feeling that they were always being treated
as inferior. Frederick Douglas was concerned that Gen. Banks’ policy was an attempt to take huge step
back for everything that was given to the slaves after the Civil War.
The main concern for Fredrick Douglas was that the Banks’ Law was going to demolish all that
