“The Forest Dweller” Hermann Hesse
There are people in this world who lie to gain power or harm. A lie is an untrue
statement that is made with the intention of bringing out a false impression or with the purpose
of deceiving. The biggest issue with lying is that trust is in jeopardy. There are times when trust
is betrayed, or people lie to us to control or manipulate or to cause an action not in another’s best
interests. When the lies are exposed, negative emotions are drawn out and we yearn to discover
the truths in which the lies were meant to hide. We learn it is possible to experience and explore
new things. In “The Forest Dweller,” Hermann Hesse describes the desire to learn the truth and
steps taken to determine, act and rely on our own faith.
Hesse writes, “Everything had been nothing but lies and deceit.” (2) Trust and confidence
