Paper #1: Ford Pinto
In the late 1960s auto industry legend Lee Iacocca, then the president of the Ford Motor
Company ordered the production of a car that would compete directly with the Japanese auto
industry. The result was the hugely popular Ford Pinto that began produc%on in 1971. As
popular as the car was, it possessed a major design -aw that would make the car one of the
most infamous of all %me: when struck from behind at a speed of twenty miles per hour or
greater it would be at severe risk of burs%ng into -ames due to the posi%oning of a bolt in the
rear bumper that may puncture the gas tank (DeGeorge 298).
