Forced displacement and isolation proved to be central mechanisms in New World
enslavement of Africans. What are some other factors that explain why they were
enslaved?
Slavery in America differs from slavery in Africa but in both the cases the slave master thinks
himself of superior from the slaves. In Africa, the slaves are kept more for legal purposes and
domestic use. There were few slaves that were local others were traded from other countries.
There were various ways in which slavery was practiced such as if a person is a military slave,
criminal, war captive, prostitution or someone is unable to pay its debts. In both the East and
West Africa slaves were used on plantations esp. in the 19th century. The government preferred
legalised slavery over export slavery. Moreover, the trend of slavery was quite common in Africa
which had been going on for decades. Those who could afford slaves were regarded highly in the
society and their connections grew. This, however, also resulted in the children of the slaves
being tied to their father’s masters but in some cases they were given higher statuses for
example, a chief.
On the North American mainland, how and why did African slavery become so important
in southern colonies and states?
Enslaved Africans lived in huge settlements in the South or the Atlantic area as compared to
North America which was a closed society. They lost all their rights and were treated as
properties. They contributed a lot for the Southern slave masters making them amongst the 5th
richest in the world. Hence, flourishing their economy. They worked in cotton, timber,
