What is a food label and why are they important? A food label is a label on the food that
gives nutrition facts about the food in the packaging. Food labels are important because
they are now required to list all of the nutrition facts and ingredients of a product. BelVita
breakfast biscuits are considered a “healthier alternative” to other snacks, but is this really
true?
When designing a package for food, the designers usually use certain colors, fonts, images,
etc. to interest the person looking to buy the product. Yellow is a bright color that draws
people’s attention, and is the main color of the BelVita packaging. The color yellow is also
used because it represents the sun. It uses yellow because this is a breakfast food and you
eat it in the morning when the sun is rising. The colors that are used for the font are
different shades of greens and browns, which are the same colors of plants and wheat/oats.
This is a way that the company makes you believe that their product is comprised mostly
of ingredients that are good for them. The packaging also contains images of oats and
wheat, further embedding the idea in the customer’s mind that their product is healthy for
them.
No company is going to openly say that their product is bad for you. They will always try
to emphasize the healthier ingredients in their products. On the front of the BelVita
package you will see phrases like, “19g of whole grain” or “4 breakfast biscuits for 230
