Growing up, my godmother and great grandmother were like second mothers to me.
They did the impossible to help my parents out and helped raise me. My grandmother would
also play my patient and I would play her doctor and she would always tell me I will one day
make an amazing nurse. My godmother was a nurse herself and passed away in her 30s from
cancer. They gave me everything, from the little that they had. My godmother, not only did she
do this in her personal life, but also in her professional life as well.
When I started at Miami Dade College, my Anatomy professor told the class it was
mandatory to do hours for the class, but to do them in your career field. I chose to do them at
Mercy Hospital and I got the chance to do it in the Emergency Department. I had the privilege
to shadow many nurses, ER techs, and physician assistants in most of their procedures. I can
honestly say that it was there that I learned most of my knowledge in health care today. It
really helped me realize that being a nurse is what I want to do for the rest of my life.
I have also had the opportunity to take an LPN course and got to learn a lot and did
clinical rotations in a nursing home where I also really enjoyed helping my patients. I worked for
Chrysalis Health, which is a mental health company, for four years and got to learn a lot about
working for a private health care office and about mental health, which I found interesting, but
not my main choice when it comes to nursing.
As a student nurse, I have been able to see the connection that one makes with a
patient. I have seen the love and loss that comes from this profession and I have been
preparing for this since I was younger. It will mean the world to me if I got to finish this degree
and continue to live out the dream that my godmother could not finish living. I recently was
hired to work for Baptist Health of South Florida, which has always been my dream to work for
them one day. I ultimately would love to become an ARNP and work in NICU or in the ER for
this company.
