The world is becoming increasingly weak as more people try to discover new
ways to accomplish tasks by having to input the least amount of work. In the passage,
“Does Your Child Taste Salty?” by Florence King, she discusses how the world is full of
helpists encouraging escapists behavior. A helpist is a person endorsing the laziness of an
escapist by allowing them to take the easy way out. Escapists are the people trying to
accomplish the most by exerting a trivial amount of effort. This behavior causes people to
become less susceptible to their emotions and unfazed by horrific events. People who are
given unnecessary help are more likely to be brainwashed by peer pressure and will begin
to lose their individuality. They will conform to society instead of coming up with new
original ideas. Florence King strongly believes in being independent. Only accepting help
from yourself gives people a sense of self satisfaction and makes them believe they can
be the ones to discover new and great concepts. This ideology will be the downfall to
society.
Helpists promote the idea that people are unable to accomplish anything without
the use of other people’s knowledge and already accounted for ideas and discoveries.
Florence King detests this idea and the outcomes this philosophy causes. Being
independent allows people to grow individually and have their own behaviors and habits
without the influences of everyday society. With this mentality, the world will never
evolve or prosper into a better society, the world will instead hit a stand still point and
