Reaction Paper: Flight From Conversation
In the article, Sherry Turkle started off with the statement, “We live in a technological
universe in which we are always communicating. And yet we have sacrificed conversation for
mere connection.” Indeed, in this modern society, people would rather choose to communicate
online than face-to-face. Individuals got accustomed to the convenience brought by technology
and seemed to forget that connection can also happen through personal conversations with the
people around them. Still, the magic of being able to communicate despite distances led us to
embrace the concept of being “alone together”. It’s true that whenever we are alone, we seek
people to connect with. This is where technology comes to the rescue. In an instant, with just our
keyboards and small screens, we can connect with others. Hence, since it helps us escape
solitude, people assume that constant connection is the key to constant happiness. However, in
reality, if we always use others to flee from solitude, our minds remember. In turn, we get totally
reliant on others in order to be happy and become less anxious. Do you still think that connection
can make you feel less lonely? No, it’s the opposite. This is not how it should work. You can’t
expect others to be there at all times to make you happy. It’s one of the paradoxes in life.
Accepting solitude helps us reflect and develop mental strength, making us not too
