The Gender Hierarchy
In the reading of “The Use of Force” written by William Carlos Williams, a male doctor
is seen to have a dominant effect over a young girl and her family. The doctor first comes in to
see the sick child, but the child is hesitant to let him inspect her. When the young girl refuses to
open her mouth for a throat examination, the doctor is then forced to painfully shove his medical
instrument down her throat. Even though the man is a doctor, he has an unusual supremacy over
the child and her family. He gives out orders for example; he tells the parents to hold their child’s
waist down while he examines her. He also tells the mother to fetch him a spoon from the
kitchen as if she was his servant. These commands may seem meniscal since he is in fact a
doctor, but they show that he has a large impact on what the people do.
The theory of there being an actual gender hierarchy dates as far back as to the bible. In
the story of Adam and Eve, some may say that Eve was the more dominant and influential of the
two since she encouraged Adam to eat the forbidden fruit. But Ephesians 5:22–23 reads,

“Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife
even as Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is himself its Savior” (The Holy Bible).
The male is the one who is supposed to take the initiative, not only in spiritual guidance but also
in important decision making (Bible Explained). Now this does not mean that the male is to
always have the final say. During cases in which the wife is handling responsibilities in the
home, the concluding decisions should be made by her.
Staying in the bible, verses 21 through 23 in chapter 2 of the book of Genesis says that
women were created from a man’s bone. The verses read,
So the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and he slept; then He took
one of his ribs and closed up the flesh at that place. The LORD God fashioned into a
woman the rib which He had taken from the man, and brought her to the man. The man
