Course Objectives:
The goal of this course is to familiarize students with the basic legal and
ethical concepts that impact the business world.
Students will develop a practical understanding of topics such as: alternative
dispute resolution, criminal law, administrative agencies, contract law, labor
law, torts, business organizations, securities regulation, antitrust law, real and
personal property, employment discrimination, environmental law and
international law.
Finance Department Student Learning Outcome (SLO):
1. Identify legal issues that impact financial and other risks a!ecting
business.
2. Analyze relevant case law for the purpose of finding legal precedents
that will be used to persuade a judge or jury.
3. Interpret statutory law for purposes of risk avoidance, and to establish
control mechanisms.
At the end of the course students should be able to:
1. Communicate e!ectively;
2. Be a critical thinker;
3. Analyze legal and ethical problems;
4. Have a global perspective; and
5. Be knowledgeable about the essentials of business.
Supplemental Student Learning Outcomes (SLO):
1. Identify and be familiar with the variety of statutory and case law a!ecting
business entities and employers;
2. Assess the legal, monetary and practical risks/benefits of doing business
both domestic and international;
3. Correctly apply laws in the work place that govern and foster positive
employer/employee relations;
4. Know and abide by constitutional guidelines that set parameters for
acceptable business conduct;
5. Make thoughtful, well reasoned business decisions that promote the health
and growth of one’s business; and
6. Professional Responsibility.
