The “Long March” (1934-1935)- Middle East and Asia
o Communists relocate to the North
o 100,000 of Red Army start out on the Long March->Vast majority does not survive–>March 1000’s miles-
>lasted a year
o Communist Party does relocate->Mao becomes leader of the communist party
o Many non-communists felt sympathy for the communist party for what they went through
o Many begin to question why they’re against the communists
o They start to think they should be more against Japan
The Manchurian Incident (1931)-Middle East and Asia- Japan under Emperor Hirohito
o Japan took great interest in Manchuria->Abundance of natural resources->Japan wanted for improvements
o Sino-Japanese War-the treaty->Japan would extract those resources for their own good
o Japan lays its own railroad to extract faster
o China had no central government to stop it but nationalist start putting China together
o They start expanding to Manchuria->Reclaim Manchuria for China, but Japan can’t allow that to happen
o Result is the Manchurian Incident->Japan lays explosives on railway but blames China
o Use as an excuse to tighten control on Manchuria–>1000’s of troops defends Japan
o Japan says Manchuria will be Independent->Japan brings last emperor of Qing for Manchuria and Japan
controls it
o Japans encroachment is going to start increasing->Leads to Japan+China on a collision course
