Prescription drugs are a huge issue in our society since it is used to help people with their
sicknesses, but should be highly monitored when distributed. This issue correlates with the novel Brave
New World by Aldous Huxley. Brave New World is about a futuristic society where genetics are
changed by man, they control the reproduction rate. Two employees that work at the hatchery Henry
Foster and Lenina Crowne have been dating, which is against what this society believes in. Lenina soon
decides to date Bernard Marx, which they both end up taking a vacation in a reservation in New
Mexico, where all the people who are considered “unworthy” to the futuristic society known as Utopia.
Before their trip Bernard was threatened by Tomakin the director of the hatcheries, that he will be
exiled if he goes. Lenina and Bernard meet Linda and her son, John the Savage. Which Bernard soon
finds out that John is the son of Tomakin, “The Director”. Lenina ends up falling up with John. They all
end up going back to the city, and Tomakin ends up resigning from his position because he was scared
of being caught if him being the father of John. Now Bernard doesn’t have to worry about being exiled
from Iceland. John soon grows repulsed by the ways of the new world. Lenina then tries to seduce
John but John resists his attraction and wants for Lenina. John finds out that his mother passed away
from over dosage soma. John goes crazy and tries to convert Utopians to his way “the savage way”.
Rebellion starts and Bernard, Helmholtz Watson are blamed for the rebellion. John is retained for
experimentation, he resists and then flees into solitude, but the citizens start hounding John. He became
filled with misery and depression, which causes him to lose himself, then commits suicide. Drugs play
a huge role in this novel, because they used drugs for their own pleasure. Therefore, prescription drugs
are taken lightly in modern society, they should be carefully dispensed to prevent the misuse of the
drugs.

only piece of medication used by the citizens in Brave New World, and this drug is mentioned time and
time again in the novel, showing its popularity among the citizens of the World State. Yet there was a
dark history in this futuristic society. "There was a thing called Heaven; but all the same they used to
drink enormous quantities of alcohol." "There was a thing called the soul and a thing called
immortality.""But they used to take morphia and cocaine." (Huxley 37). Which explains a time before
soma (our society today). The people believed in a god and an afterlife, yet drowned their sorrows in
alcohol. The situation escalated for the worse when they took to strong drugs such as morphine and
cocaine. At the time, people had soon lost all faith in a supernatural deity watching them and were
forced to start having faith in scientific principles. Which resembles todays society of many addicts
who loose faith in religion, but turn to drugs to make them forget all their troubles that individuals are
facing. Mustapha Mond, wanted to make a substitute for all the bad drugs that caused harm the human
