ACT 1
Q1. What is Othello’s position in society? How is he regarded by those who know him? By his own
words, when we first meet him in scene ii, what traits of character does he manifest?
A1. Othello is respected as a military leader, he is known as a powerful leader. Some people see
him as different or an outsider from the population because of his skin color. In scene ii he is happy and
confident because he believes his military standing will help aid him from Brabantio’s. He wants to gain
Brabantio’s respect so he can marry his daughter.
Q2. How do you account for Brabantio’s dismay in learning of his daughter’s marriage, despite the fact
that Desdemona has married a man so generally honored and admired?
A2. Brabantio’s dismay is due to the fact that he sees his daughter as property or his. He didn’t
think Othello would take interest in her. Brabantio’s won’t have any support for the marriage I don’t
think.
