Ave Maria, gratia plena by Josquin des Prez is the compositions that has especially interested me
and in some sense surprised me. To start, I did not know the first part was saying Hail Mary. I had
known the song was from the classical period due to the way they sung it. But what interested me
was how they use this song sometimes as a prayer because its a Catholic phrase. It was also a give
away that it was a prayer because at the end they said Amen. The ending was interesting because
they held the Amen for effects. The imitation part of the song of the song sounds like a duet. It
seems like parts of it overlap with each other. Meaning the duets overlap each other. I like the initial
voice that entered because it sets the melody. And then when the soprano it makes it more
interesting. Afterwards when the alto enters along with the tenor and the bass it establishes a tone
for the song. The homophonic texture in the song makes it good because it makes each tone
supported by the other. Also the contrasts of the roles makes it move in unison.
