“Fences” was set in the 1950’s written by August Wilson. The play’s main theme was to
go over the base of African American experiences, race relations, and generational change. The
first act of the play is about Troy Maxson’s life. We meet all the main characters surrounding
Troy; first there’s his best friend, Bono, next there’s Rose, Troy’s wife. Then there’s Lyons, Troy’s
son from a previous relationship. We also meet in the play Gabriel, Troy’s brother. And the last
important character is Cory, Troy’s son by Rose, whom wants to go to school for football. In the
play we learned that Troy was a baseball player and wanted to go to the league but it never
happened because at the time of his youthful age, whites were not letting black’s play in the
league. Later on down the road his son gets offered a football opportunity to go play football for
college, but Troy will not let him because he feels that the white’s will neglect his son as well
