Female athletes v. Male athletes
For a long time, everything about the world has been male dominate. Women were
restricted from a lot of things in the past. Anything from voting to participating in live
performances, women couldn’t be a part of. Women were discriminated against just for
being a woman. We now live in a world where women are given equal opportunity and
rights. At least that’s what society wants us to think. In reality, women still aren’t being
treated equally like men are. A big part of this discrimination occurs in the sports industry.
Women are not receiving the same attention nor benefits like the men are. Female athletes
receive plenty of discriminatory actions from sports industry.
When it comes down to the finance, there is a clear difference in the pay between males
and females. In college athletics, male athletes in the NCAA receive 55% of the awarded
scholarship money, leaving only 45% allotted to female athletes. WNBA players make
$4,428,000 less than NBA players. On average, females make $72,000 while the men
make $4,500,000. In 2015 the minimum salary for a WNBA player was $38,913, and
maximum was $109,500. For NBA players the minimum salary was $525,093, while the
maximum was $16.407 million. In golf, females earn $811,000 less than men on average.
In tennis, women make $85,000 more than men on average, but if you look at the top
players, the men are earning plenty more than the women are.
