Federal government imposition of carbon tax
iii
Executive summary
The main purpose of this literature review is to analyze the perspective of both sides of
the argument that is pro and against the side. The things that had initiated me to choose this topic
was, it’s current, interesting and satisfies the requirement. The carbon tax is an interesting topic
because it is relevant to our daily life and I am one of the people who will be paying these taxes.
I want to explore more in the depth to get the knowledge of why the government is imposing
these kinds of new taxes. I came across problems like finding the right resource, summarizing
the content from the article, using appropriate sentence and grammar structure, preparing
citations for few websites like How does Stuff Works, analyzing concerning the things learned in
class like logical fallacies, etc., I divided the topic into two divisions, one is people who support
the government and the other side, the people reject it. In the pro side, government’s point is if
the carbon tax is imposed, it will encourage people to find various ways to reduce emission like
low carbon cars, low emission from the industries or factories, use public transit, etc.,
Economists think this a way to reduce burning fossil fuels emitted from industries. On the other
side, people think it is not going to be useful and effective unless all countries in the world
implement it. Because Canada is emitting only a few percent of world carbon emission. Alberta
premier Jason Kenney is opposing the Federal that the carbon tax should only be imposed on
industries that are heavily emitting these kinds of gases not to the people. The Alberta Court is in
the favor of Premier and said it is “unconstitutional” which means that it not in the rules. The
good news is we get refunds from the government after each year in order to support and
encourage. In industries, when they show a reduction in emission they will also get refunds from
the tax that they paid. I faced some roadblocks like I got many points for the pro side and not for
the against side. After which I didn’t know what to write, then I found the long-term low
greenhouse gas strategy (LTGHGS) and Paris agreement, I thought it would be relevant for my
topic and researched those. In LTGHGC, Canada agreed to reduce the greenhouse gas emission
by 2050 and the Paris agreement is also similar to the LTGHGC, which is an agreement with 197
countries to reduce the emissions and create a low carbon environment. I thought that’s why the
federal are implementing new tax systems to achieve the objectives. Methodologies that are used
are reading the articles to get a basic understanding of the topic and started to take notes on each
article. After that, I started my writing as going through I find more articles relevant to my
paragraphs and added it back to back. Therefore, if people accept the carbon tax then we could
help the government to protect our planet from reducing the emission from burning fossil fuels,
greenhouse gas, and carbon.
