Section 1: Family Histories
History holds very important information that has helped us and will help us develop
who we are. “Many different kinds of history influence our understanding of who we are as
individuals, as family members, as members of culture groups, as citizens of a nation” (p. 73).
One of the most important types of history is family history. This is history that occurs at the
same time all other histories, but it is on a more personal level. The reason that family history is
important is because it has shaped you and generations of your family. Without family history,
people would not be able to develop their identity of who they want to be and who they don’t
want to be. “Identity is created by the development of the ‘self’ (our self-concept, in spurts,
through communication over long periods of time” (p. 96). The concept of identity and family
