Introduction
This case looks at the integrity of the Family Games company’s controller and the chief financial
officer (CFO), and whether they will subject the company’s CEO threats and pressures. Indeed,
Family Game Inc. is known as a privately-owned firm in wholesome family electronic games,
which reported a net loss over the last two years because of cost-cutting needed for competing
with manufacturers and distributors abroad. On another side, the company’s CEO was looking at
raising his performance bonus by increasing the 2018’s earnings since he had significant debt
resulting from gambling (Mintz, & Morris, 2020). Therefore, the chief financial officer, Carl Land,
has instructed Helen Strom, the controller, to record the $ 12 million of the current year’s revenue
in the previous year, as he believed that revenue is a continuation transaction started in 2018 and
must register in that year (Mintz, & Morris, 2020). In contrast, Helen rejected to participate in this
manipulation, as she knew that lawyers hadn’t signed off on the sales transaction till the beginning
of the year 2019, and she will make this change only to meet her CEO’s interests and needs.
Nonetheless, Carl conveyed to her that if she doesn’t move the revenue to the prior accounting
term, the company’s CEO would halt reimbursing care costs for her children, which attains $ 35000
around 35% of her annual salary (Mintz, & Morris, 2020). Accordingly, this business brief will
analyze Helen’s dilemma using codes of The American Institute of Certified Public Accountants
(AICPA), as well as it will explain the most important steps needs to resolve her issue.
