Eid: The Spiritual Holiday that brings us Together
“Laiba, its confirmed, it is Eid tomorrow”, my mother says as she was making me a cup of
coffee. I come out of my fantasy world and run towards my sister to start preparing for the
festival. My mother starts preparing meals for the big festival, as soon as she heard the news,
whereas my brothers start to get ready by taking out their finest clothes (already decided) from
their wardrobe. My dad sitting on the couch and making phone calls to family & friends wishing,
“Eid Mubarak!” (have a blessed Eid). The night before Eid is memorable for my family as we
get ready for Eid by helping each other and strengthening our bond.
Muslims across the world celebrate Eid as their festival twice a year, once at the end of Ramadan
that is the 1st day of the 10th month of the Islamic Calendar and the other celebrated on the 10th
day of the last month of the Islamic Calendar. Both celebrations depend on the sighting of the
moon which makes the countries around the world to celebrate on different days. On Eid Eve we
start preparing by making sure our clothes ironed, meals cooked, jewellery is ready, and hands
filled with henna. Muslims begin the festival by praying the congregational Eid prayer, and
before that, it is obligatory to have something sweet. On the way to the prayer, we recite Takbir

(words praising our Lord) in Arabic. After praying, friends and family gather to have a big feast
among themselves to enjoy the taste of a range of dishes. Some people travel back to their home
countries or towns to celebrate the festival with their families to reinvigorate the bond of
closeness. Eid is a 3-day joyous occasion that is meant to be celebrated to complete the spiritual
duty and a time to share kisses, hugs, and laughter with family and friends. It is a time to express
peace, friendship, and love, and Muslims globally reach out to their non-Muslim friends, share
Eid greetings, and invite them to their Eid gatherings and dinner. This festival includes a sense of
appreciation and kindness. The spiritual Eid tradition has been going on for years and has created
memories all along the way.
The festival of Eid brings my family together, and we help each other prepare for it. My sister
and I help my mother cook the meals, iron everyone’s clothes and at the end, my mother applies
