Preventing falls starts in the home because six out of every ten falls happen in
the home. Some of the most common ways to prevent falls are to clear walkways and
make sure they are well lit, remove rugs or put adhesive on the bottom to prevent
slipping, and coil or tape electrical cords next to the wall to prevent tripping
(Steinman). A novel idea I saw was to tie bells onto the collars of pets in order to
avoid tripping on them.
In two-story household stairs can be a common problem. It’s important that
the senior has at least one firm handrail on the side of stairs. It’s also a wise decision
to put non-slip treads on the on stairs for better grip and to use highlight products to
mark edges clearly. Good lighting on stairways is especially important. Light
switches at the top and bottom of stairs can help the senior see better (Steinman). If
