Introduction: Time Management Problem
Time management is essential to one’s life because it increases both efficacy and
productivity, and reduces stress. Regulating time is essential when trying to achieve a goal
because that is how one ensures progress. As a full time student and a full time worker I have
had a hard time regulating my time. It seems like I am always rushing through my school work
and I am often exhausted or stressing out. For the longest time I was questioning myself and
wondering why was I not getting my tasks done on time. Soon I realized that Facebook was a
major factor for my procrastination, and for the time I have being wasting day after day.
My time management problem is the amount of times I use Facebook through a 24- hour
period. I found myself using Facebook around 15-29 times a day. I noticed this problem ever
since I started attending college. I noticed that I would always start my academic semester very
well, and that I would get all of my readings and assignment done beforehand. However, as each
semester progressed I noticed that I stopped completing my work on time. As I tracked my
behavior for this assignment, I came to the realization that I have being using Facebook as a
distraction to avoid reality. I regularly found myself making excuses for constantly logging in
and using Facebook. Coming back from school or work I often told myself something a long the
lines of “I am so tired from working too hard. I need a short break before I continue”.
Nevertheless, that “short” break would turn into a long one. I also came to the realization that by
using Facebook I was often sleeping very little. Constantly logging in and using Facebook has
been taking a lot of my time, affecting not only my academic performance, but also my overall
well being.

Background
Through out the years the use of social media, such as Facebook, has increased amongst
people of all ages. Social media has facilitated people’s lives in a couple of ways, however, it has
also brought a lot of consequences. One of the most common negative effects of social is
dependency. Many people have grown the need to use social media constantly. This has caused a
disruption on how effectively we manage our time, especially for young people. According to the
article, “Left to Their Own Devices: College Students’ ‘Guilty Pleasure’ Media Use and Time
Management”, social media has become the guilty pleasure of many college students, affecting
their academic performance. In a matter of fact, there has been great concern amongst many
educational figures over the possibility that the time spent using some or all of these leisure
media may be substituting for time spent on school-related activities” (Panek, 2014, p. 2). The
