Should college be free?
It is my opinion that college for students should not be free. We get our free education
through grade school. If college was free for everyone, who would fund the colleges? Would
the degree have any worth? Not only are those two of the questions I’d have to ask, but who
would serve in our military?
If a college education is provided to everyone at no cost, where would the funds come
from? It would have to come from somewhere. The money would come from US citizen taxes
and from the government. There are several problems with this. To quote Donald Trump,
“There is no such things as free education, because you that ultimately somebody else is going
to be paying for that education. The taxpayers.”1 The first problem is that everyone would have
to pay higher taxes. That means, you earn an education, go out and get a job and pay
extremely high taxes. Doesn’t seem very rewarding to me. Don’t we pay enough taxes?
Personally, I don’t want to front the bill for everyone to go to college. Its estimated to cost $70
BILLION dollars a year to provide free college to everyone. If the government fronts the bill,
they are just tacking on more debt to our government. We are already TRILLIONS of dollars in
debt! Do we need more debt? With the government providing the free education to all college
students, it would also give them more control over the universities and colleges.
Secondly, if everyone has a degree, what is it worth? Every year, students bust their
tails trying to obtain their degree and advance in the career of their choice. Now, everyone has
a degree? This would mean that there first would have to be waiting lists at universities and
