In John Updike’s A&P there is an underlying story that goes beyond the characters of the
story that resonates with today's society. As we look more in-depth into the story of A&P,
Updike presents to us a story of the hidden struggles of class. We are introduced to our narrator
and the main character of the story, Sammy, at the beginning. Sammy is a nineteen-year-old boy
who is working as a cashier at an A&P grocery store, in a small New England town, which is
five miles from the beach. A cashier could be considered a job near the bottom of the ladder
when it comes to a class structure which has made him extremely unhappy.
Updike introduces this subject at the beginning of the story “In walks these three girls in
nothing but bathing suits.” (461). It is through this opening that we see Sammy begin identifying
the differences between the group of girls and himself. As the story continues, our narrator
continues to compare the girls to other customers in the store. The prime patrons of the A&P
