NOTE: In case you do not yet have access to the lab manual, a copy of the procedure is posted under Week 2 on
CCLE. Please make sure to purchase the lab manual as soon as possible since any future materials and/or
procedures that are directly from the lab manual will not be posted online.

Important Notes on Lab Policy:
PPE Policy: You must follow the PPE policy when in lab. A mandatory lab safety check will be conducted at
the beginning of the lab. Students without proper PPE (i.e. long pants/skirt, closed-toe shoes, flame resistant lab
coat, and safety glasses) will be dismissed from the laboratory. Pants/skirts must be at least ankle length with
NO exposed skin between pants and shoes. Please note three-quarter length pants, leggings, or pants with tears
and holes are NOT acceptable forms of long pants when performing laboratory work.
Lab Attendance: You must arrive to your lab section on time. A pre-lab report that is not turned in within the
first 10 minutes of the lab section will receive NO credit. Any student that is more than 20 minutes late to the
lab will NOT be allowed to complete the experiment (i.e. NO CREDIT for the entire lab).

Pre-lab Report Guidelines (due 1/15 – 1/18, depending on enrolled section):
Print out and answer the questions directly on this worksheet. Once you have completed the worksheet, upload it
as a PDF to Gradescope BEFORE your lab section meets. You MUST also bring the physical copy of this
completed worksheet to your lab section to turn into your TA at the beginning of the lab period.
(A) Procedural Flowchart
Procedural Modification: Repeat the entire experiment using a 10-mL graduated cylinder rather than a 10-
mL volumetric pipet.
Procedural Correction to 4th edition: On page V.4, the last sentence in the procedure should read “Record
the temperature of the water left in the wash bottle.”
A flowchart is NOT a reproduction of the experimental procedure, but rather a chart or list that you can
consult during lab in order to make sure you have not missed any important steps. Copy the flowchart below
and fill in the blanks with the appropriate missing steps.
(B) Purpose of Experiment
For this part of the report, you should focus on the objective(s) and the purpose(s) of the experiment.
Designing the flowchart will help you determine what you will be doing during the lab, but you will need to
look over the post-lab guidelines (see page 5-11) to understand the goals of the experiment.
List the equipment and techniques you will be using in the experiment.
